This Is Your Brain on Music

In his book This Is Your Brain on Music, neuroscientist and musician Daniel J. Levitin discusses the effect music has on the human brain. He notes that music is unique in its ability to stimulate all areas of the brain at once. He says, “Musical activity involves nearly every region of the brain that we know about, and nearly every neural subsystem.”

In my five-step Brain Education method, the goal of the fourth step, Brain Integrating, is to unify the three layers of the brain—the primitive brain stem, the emotional limbic system, and the rational neocortcx. Very often one part of the brain undermines another, as when rational thinking is overcome by emotion. The goal of Brain Integrating is to get the various parts of the brain working together harmoniously, rather than competing with each other. Since it activates diverse parts of the brain, music seems to be a good step in that direction, which may also explain the cognitive advantage that children who study music seem to have over their nonmusical peers (Levitin).

Yull-yo, the Rhythm of Life

When I train people in the Brain Wave Vibration method, I usually use sa-mul-no-ri, the traditional drumming art of my native Korea. It has its roots in very ancient aspects of Korean culture originating in the rituals of farmers who wished to ensure the success of their crops.

The four sa-mul-no-ri instruments each represent a different weather condition: the jang-gu, an hourglass-shaped drum, represents rain; the kkwaeng-gwa-ri, a small gong, represents thunder; the jing, the larger of two gongs, represents the wind; and the buk, a large bass drum, represents clouds. The instruments are also thought to signify the voices of both heaven and Earth. The buk and jang-gu, which are made of leather, represent the sounds of the Earth, while the jing and kkwaeng-gwa-ri, made of metal, represent sounds of the heavens. The music is composed to match the progression of nature—the wind blows, the clouds gather, thunder and lightning strike, and the rain falls. On hearing the music, listeners arc swept up in the cycle of Earth’s natural rhythms.

Ilchi Lee Brain Education Article

The goal of Brain Wave Vibration is to completely quiet the mind so that the latent powers of the brain can come to the forefront. However, this is not so easy for most people, since they are accustomed to constant, habitual chatter in their minds. Instead of vainly trying to shut off your mind, you can concentrate on a single positive thought. Choose something highly empowering that relates to your personal vision. For example, it could be something as simple as, “I am whole. I am one.” Chant this to yourself, either silently or aloud, as a personal mantra while you practice. Through this process, the vibrations of your own voice will add to the overall effect on your brain waves and will strengthen your transformational intent. If you have any weakness, pain, or disease in your body, you can also say the name of that particular body part as you practice Brain Wave Vibration. For example, if you are having a problem with your heart, then repeat a simple, affirmative statement, such as “Healthy heart, healthy heart.”

Breathe well.

Because of our rushed, stressful way of life, most of us do not breathe properly. Our breath becomes shallow and unstable. Do not force your breath, but locus on breathing naturally while you are practicing Brain Wave Vibration. Focus on exhaling completely because this will help you release tension from the body Also, open your mouth a little bit to allow your breath to flow freely. Imagine that you are expelling all the negative energy from your body through your mouth and nose.

How to choose your music well

Strictly speaking, Brain Wave Vibration practice does not require music. It is about your own internal rhythms, not about moving to a beat as you would when you dance. However, music can be helpful when you begin. Obviously, very slow and sentimental music is not suitable for the vibration. The most effective music for Brain Wave Vibration is music with a strong basic beat, such as that found in many forms of traditional drumming. I find Korean sa-mul-no-ri to be especially effective because it awakens the brain with a lively combination of sounds from gongs and drums, generating a powerful vibration that you can feel throughout your body.

In addition to sa-mul-no-ri. Percussive folk instrument from Africa and South America otter a simple, primitive repetition of sound that replicates the basic rhythms of life. Music is helpful to induce the proper state of mind for Brain Wave Vibration in the beginning, but as time goes by, the rhythm of the body should overpower the rhythm of the music. Be sure to focus inward at all times and allow your own rhythm to come forward.

Dahn Yoga Dallas

You can practice Brain Wave Vibration just about anywhere, but you will find that different locations provide different effects. You can easily practice right at your desk with simple versions of Brain Wave Vibration, such as the Head Nod, even in the middle of a busy office. However, sometimes you may wish to go more deeply into the vibration than that sort of environment will allow. In that case, it is ideal to practice in a quiet place with few distractions where no one will interrupt. If you have a chance to do so, it is also a good idea to practice with others at a training center. When practicing with others, a resonance of the brain waves occurs that deepens the experience and enhances the effect.

Be confident.

This method is so simple that it can be mastered just by reading this book. However, when trying it for the first time, it is natural to feel awkward about the process and to wonder if your posture is correct. You may worry about looking silly, or you may have some doubts about the method’s validity. Try to empty your mind of these thoughts and just follow the natural wisdom of your body. Remember that there is no right or wrong way to practice. If you are sincere and are willing to focus on yourself, your results will be excellent.

Chakra Activation

Published by squeak under Brain Education, Dahn Yoga, Ilchi Lee

Through regular vibratory stimulation, the Power Brain Energizer can effectively awaken and activate the individual Chakras. The frequency of the Power Brain Energizer vibration lowers the brain waves to facilitate the enhancement of energy. The Power Brain Energizer can help you awaken each Chakra so that you can easily retain and recall the specific sensations associated with each Chakra.

In words of Ilchi lee we begin by stimulating the Jang-shim Chakra points on the hands, before moving on to the seven internal Chakras. Then, we move from the first to the seventh Chakra in reverse order.

Sit comfortably in half lotus position, with your shoulders relaxed. Turn the Power Brain Energizers on, and place them in your hands. Raise your hands two inches above your knees.

Complete Unity of Body, Emotions, and Soul

Published by squeak under Brain Education, Dahn Yoga, Ilchi Lee

A thousand-leaf, lavender lotus flower symbolizes the seventh Chakra. Ilchi Lee says this Chakra symbolizes perfect harmony and complete integration of body, emotion, mind, and spirit.

The seventh Chakra creates truth and happiness in their purest essence. Here, a sense of the individual self disappears. Awareness is from a place of truth, and everything is in holistic unity, without the illusion of separation. This allows you to fully experience the harmonious order of the cosmos.

An individual with an inactive seventh Chakra will not be able to experience spiritual existence, nor understand the realm of the soul and the universe. Inability to acknowledge the spiritual aspect of life means ignorance of the essential purpose of life.

It is not possible to explain the awakening of the seventh Chakra with words. Nor is it possible to analyze it in logical or scientific terms. The seventh Chakra is a place of infinity, allowing the state of Oneness, where suffering caused by illusory pleasure, pain, fame, and wealth is non-existent. To find your own divinity, to reach a state of salvation, and to reach Nirvana all refer to a full awakening of the seventh Chakra.
