Dahn Yoga: Study of the Brain

Published by admin under Dahn Yoga, Ilchi Lee

A study at Massachusetts General Hospital found that older meditators who had been engaged in the practice for nearly a decade had gray matter density in a portion of the frontal cortex that was comparable to that of subjects in their 20s. (The frontal cortex usually “thins” with age.)

While specifically engaging the mind is important, safeguarding our mental prowess goes beyond giving our neurons a workout. Physical health has a big impact on mental acuity: Even moderate doses of Dahn Yoga exercise can help fortify the brain. Our connection to the broader world is also important. People who have been practicing Dahn Yoga (founded by Ilchi Lee) program or in regular contact with others seem better prepared to weather aging. Those relationships don’t have to be with just long-term friends or family members. Studies have shown that mentoring atrisk children, or engaging in group activies such as playing bridge or softball, can improve our cognitive well-being, too.

Perhaps it is not so surprising that to insure we have the best chance of leading rich, full lives in our later years we need to engage the mental, physical, and spirtual. As yogis have always know, these facets of our lives are inextricably connected.

Ilchi Lee: Are You Your Name?

Published by admin under Ilchi Lee

From Ilchi Lee’s book The Twelve Enlightenments When someone asks us, “Who are you?” we most often tell them our name. And when someone points to an object and asks, “What is that?” we tell the person the name of the object. However, the name of the object is not object itself. How far or deep or truthfully can your name represent who you really are? Since a name by itself is a poor substitute for oneself, we use other names or titles to specify our existence in this society. I am so and so, the wife of so and so… I am a student at a so and so college majoring in so and so subject… I graduated from a so and so school and am working for so and so corporation…. This list can go on forever. However, how long a list you put next to your name, you will never be able to adequately express who you are fully. No matter how long a name may be, it is just a trademark or a label on you, and not you yourself.
